13th Nightmare

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at about 9 p.m.

Review

13th Nightmare, a fundraiser for Dare to Dream Children’s Theatre, is a brand new haunted house located in an old church in downtown Manitowoc. While the haunt is brand new, the people in charge of art direction are anything but. They have experience with other haunts and it shows through from the minute you descend into the catacombs.

13th Nightmare has a double edged sword when it comes to their location. They are in a mostly residential neighborhood loud music and noise outside are pretty much out, as is the heavy drive by visibility some haunts get. What they do have is a kick ass building. What’s better than a haunted house being in an old building? When that building is an old church building (steeple and all!). Maybe it’s just me, but hearing someone freak out about the devil coming while you’re standing on the altar is almost mind blowing.

Fortunately for us (and unfortunately for them) there was no line when we got there. We chatted with the people running the ticket booth while the actor’s got reset and then we made our way in. The wait is outside, but they do have a small canopy for shelter from rain if needed.

The actor’s were really good. I’m not sure if any of them were a part of the theater itself or not, but they seemed like they have had training. I prefer psychological scares over the standard make you scream type scares that are typical, so this was one of my favorites on that regard. I’d rather have actors following me around or acting behind bars freaking me out than people jumping in my face and screaming. They had one of the best Asylum scenes I’ve seen, and with the high ceilings the church provides, the swamp actually felt and looked like you were outside.

The only problem I had with this haunt was the length. Coming in at around 10 minutes it definitely could have been longer. With such great actors it would be easy to add some more stories/skits to the rooms to make it last longer. We had the opportunity to talk with the directors after the haunt and they mentioned they had more plans that they just ran out of time to do, which in a first year is understandable. They definitely need to work those ideas in for next year.

Overall this haunt is definitely above average. In some aspects they don’t look even close to a first year haunt, but in others that is evident. You can tell the people in charge really care about this and want to succeed. They really seemed to take to heart our thoughts and ideas. They have a great start already, and I expect even bigger things from this crew next year. I can’t wait to see how they progress!

Neenah's Most Haunted

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Friday, October 15, 2010 at about 9 p.m.

Fun Factor: Medium Fear Factor: Medium

Review

My third haunt of the year was Neenah’s Most Haunted; a haunted house fundraiser for a youth drop in center in Neenah called Youth Go. Celebrating 25 years of fear, this attraction has not lost a thing. I have attended this haunt in the past and was impressed by what they do with what they have.  While they do not use animatronics or holograms, their scenes and actors are more than capable of giving you a good time. Nonprofit haunts are refreshing in that they care more about the experience than the “cattle herding” you can experience at some of the more commercial haunts.

Getting to NMH is a little tricky, but if you have directions you should be fine. I came into town from a completely different area than I’m used to so that made a big difference. I did not notice any signs along the way, but once you are upon the haunt you know you’re in the right place. The building they use is an old city garage that looks like it was abandoned. It gives off a pretty good aura.

They do not have an indoor waiting area, so be sure to dress warm if the temps are cool. There are a few actors walking around and getting in your face. One of the best line actors I’ve seen this year was here. He never once broke character as he stared you down. We only had to wait about 7 minutes, and there was only one group ahead of us. They send groups in about 5 minutes apart, but we still ran into the group ahead of us at one point. That’s not necessarily on them; it could have been us going fast or the other group going slow.

The actor’s were very good, especially considering a vast majority of them are probably in their teens. They didn’t break character, and even if we were lost and needed help finding our way they helped get us straight while using it to enhance their characters.

As mentioned above they don’t go all out crazy on expensive pieces of equipment, but they still build a great haunt. They utilize favorites such as dark mazes and a vortex, but also use some original things such as multiple rooms with things hanging from the ceiling. (You’ll think its original when you see it!) This effect makes it easy to get lost at times.

It took us roughly 15 minutes to get through, which I would say is average. Overall with finding a parking spot, getting tickets and waiting in line we were there for around 45 minutes.

At $10 a ticket this a good valued haunted house. It’s fairly family friendly, and it’s wheelchair accessible (the only one I have ever been to that is) so it gives people who don’t necessarily have the chance to go to experience it. Add in the fact that it’s run for a good cause and you have a win-win.

Green Bay Fear Presented by The Beja Shriners

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at about 9 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: High

Review

This was my first time visiting Green Bay Fear/Shawano Manor. Even though I'm from the area I've somehow never found myself out there. Boy was I missing out. Located at the Beja Shrine Center on Bond St. right next to Hwy 41 you get a sense of seclusion even in the middle of town. You purchase your tickets and head through the woods to the waiting area.

This weekend was their first weekend of the year, so the crowds were pretty small. When I first saw the facade of the haunt I could have sworn I was in the middle of the woods up north looking at a dilapidated house. These guys have been around for a while and you can tell; they really know what they are doing! Their use of 3d is what they are known for, and they pull it off well. About the time I was thinking that wearing the glasses wasn't worth it, sensory overload kicked in as they upped the ante with their 3d paint.

The haunt is easy enough to get to, however there are no signs until you are there. Its unique location in the city still makes it feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. The whole location gives off a nice aura even in town.

When you first get there you go up to the ticket booth to purchase your ticket before walking through the woods to the waiting area. They have two options for tickets, one is your basic $13 admission and the other is $23 RIP admission. The RIP admission includes a waiting area with hot chocolate, a bonfire, a live band and a t shirt. The regular admission does not, however it's pretty close by so you can still see and hear the band. There was no wait when we were there so it's hard to say what kind of entertainment they might have when it's busy.

The actors were great from start to finish. The first person we encountered on the way to the house was the bride, and she played her character well. Our realtor greeted us at the door and welcomed us to Hell. He advised us we find a place to live seeing as we'll be there for a while. He explained the features and let us on our way. All the actors after this were just as good, from the butcher to Sparkles and her dad and everyone in between. The scenes were really good as well. The use of 3d was perfect, not so much that was overwhelming and not so little that you felt stupid wearing the glasses. The non 3d areas were done just as well, never more evident than in the theater.

It took us around 20 minutes to get through, and we didn't see or hear another group while we were in there. Their crowd control inside and outside was spot on.

With their take on classic scenes, and original scenes of their own they are not to be missed. If you want to spend your money on a haunt that has experience, quality sets and actors, and provides you with a fun time, Green Bay Fear by Shawano Manor is the place to go in Green Bay!

Oblivion Haunted House

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at about 7 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: High

Review

Our first haunt of the year was Oblivion, a brand new haunt located next to the UW Fox Valley campus. Seeing as we were one of the first groups on their second day ever, I was a little concerned it might be too early to review them. Well, any fears on that were put to rest once the real fears started. From start to finish this haunt is done right. The actor's were spot on, the sets were excellent and the overall atmosphere was chilling. This is a very impressive haunt even without it being their second day. If they keep up what they started they will be haunting us for years to come!

Getting there is a breeze, as they really are located minutes off hwy 441 in Menasha as their profile and website say. I did not notice any signs on the freeway, but once you get close they had a sign pointing the way. Their haunt is located in a non-descript warehouse building that they project their name onto at night. As mentioned earlier Oblivion is located right next to the UW Fox Valley campus, which makes it very convenient. They have been using the campus parking lot for their needs while their lot is under development. According to their website they are expecting to have it completed soon.

We were one of the first groups through, so there was not a lot of waiting to do. The wait area didn't seem to have any sort of organization to it, but that could change later in the evening when a line starts to form. Their entrance is a small but detailed facade with the customary light and music show pounding out metal tunes. They have a concession stand and a few actors walking around while you wait. My favorite costume out here was the miner, there's something about a head lamp and breathing apparatus that's kind of freaky!

The actors were great from start to finish. So good in fact that to pick favorites wouldnt be fair. The new mother, the married couple, the factory worker, the insane and everyone else was done to perfection. All the actors fit their scenes perfectly, and vice versa. The sets were elaborate but not overbearing, with lots of blood and gore where it needed to be, and nice and quaint where that was the needed style. Walking through the house it was very hard to tell this was their first weekend ever.

Crowd control is the only sticky point I could see, and even that was minor. We were there too early to know what it's like in the waiting area once a crowd starts to form, but the inside control was a little lacking. We took an average pace throughout and we almost caught the people in front of us and were caught from behind. It's hard to judge too harshly on Oblivion's part as there are a lot of variables that can factor in but the actors could hold some faster groups in their room and torment them for a while if another group was just through. Other than the one time this happened it was great; and it took nearly 20 minutes to get through.

This is a very good haunt, and an excellent value! With times being tough for a lot of people it is still important to get out and have some fun. At $12 ($10 in advance!) you get a very high quality haunt that will leave you wanting more! They are now on my must see list for future years. If they are this good in year one, I can't wait until next year!

Terror Trail

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at about 7:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: High

Review

Our fourth and final haunt of our three day 385 mile Review Crew tour took us out to Wautoma for Terror Trail. The location is out in the middle of nowhere, back in the trees, the type of area that just makes you feel like your going to die. There are signs off of the highway and then again where you turn to get back to the haunt, so it's not difficult to find even though its in the middle of nowhere. They park a truck with a flashing light on it and direct you to the parking area. There  was only one other car there, but there appeared to be an adequate amount parking available if needed. From the parking area it was a short walk to the ticket area. There was no line entertainment while we were there, but the only thing we had to wait for was the actors to resume from their break. There was a tent as well that would have provided cover for a few people if the weather required it.
The cool thing about this haunted trail is they also built buildings that make it an indoor/outdoor event. you go through the door and speak with the nurse who allows you admission to see the doctor. This was a very well done scene with quite a few surprises. And when you think someone grabbed you, they did. This haunt allows their actors to touch, which enhances the experience in my opinion. Once through the doctor's office you find yourself out on the trail. It is lit by candles or lights in plastic pumpkin pails. IT provides enough light to guide yourself, but not so much that you see what's coming up. The trail winds a lot, which allows a small amount of actor's to be in a few different scenes. The scares are well done for what seemed to be a fairly small group of actor's. The set up of the trail requires good spacing for the groups, of which they do not allow more than four to go together. This may make for a longer wait, but a much more enjoyable time once inside. They use fog machines and strobes to really mess with your eyes which keeps them from adjusting to the dark. This makes every little scare just a bit scarier because you can't see them coming. The scenes and effects were great throughout. This haunt had possibly the coolest and simplest effect I have seen with the clown room, and the ending is quite a surprise as well. It is definitely a well run haunt that you should not miss if you find yourself in the area. The only problem I really found with it was it was a bit short. I feel they could use a little character development to make people slow up a little bit. At 12 minutes after an hour and a half ride from Green Bay it's a little hard to justify just this haunt for the distance. If you are in the area though, definitely put this on your list to check out, you won't be disappointed.

Signage / Visibility / Location

The location of this haunt was great. It's out in the middle of nowhere, in an almost junkyard/farm setting. As I stated earlier, as you get deeper into the woods, it's exactly like a horror movie, you expect to die.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

They do have a small awning/tent that 10-20 people could fit under if close together. I did not see any line entertainment, but we had virtually no wait anyway. We did have a pretty interesting conversation with the guy at the front of the haunt, although it wasn't haunt related.

Actors' Performance

The actors were great. they were in multiple scenes, and never broke character. There were a couple of them that really made you feel like you were not going to be leaving there in one piece.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The sets and scenes they had were great as well. They really took their time to construct a really good haunt this year.

Length

As stated before, we completed it in 12 minutes. I'm not sure how it went that quick, because there were so many scares and surprises it felt like it was at least 20 minutes.

Crowd Control

There was no crowd to control, but they do only allow 4 through at a time, and the trail winds and gets close to itself in spots so the spacing has to be good when there is a crowd.

Most Memorable Moment

The most memorable moment is tied between the building where my fiancee walked right into the wall as she didn't realize it turned because of the smoke, and the Jason character who was staring at us from the edge of the woods as we were leaving. Believe me, thats a creepy thing to see in your headlights.

Summary

Overall I was impressed with the quality of this haunt even though it was a little short for my liking. I've been through haunts that were longer and worse. The only major flaw is if you are going from a ways away  make sure you plan a couple of other stops to truly make it worth your while. Keeping in mind that it is a charity operation, it is really well done.

Oconto Jaycees Trail Of Terror

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at about 10:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: Very High Fear Factor: High

Review

Our Third haunt of the year took us up to The Oconto Jaycees' Trail of Terror. This was my second time at this event, the first being a  couple years ago. I was excited to get out there again as the first time was a lot of fun. Let me tell you, it was well worth the drive! A ten dollar ticket buys you a half hour, guided trail through the woods (depending how long it takes you to navigate the unguided maze....). The waiting area uses a number system instead of a line, and while it is not covered, there is a big bonfire and music playing whil you wait. Watch out for the snake pit on your way to the fire!!! My fiancee and I were put into a goup with four 17-18 year olds and another couple. All fears I had that it would be an obnoxious group trying to act cool were put to rest as the guys backed away from the haybale maze entrance and tried pushing the girls through ahead of them. The actors in this maze were great at scaring and misdirecting, and one actor in particular did the best job of staying in character no matter what happened. I don't want to give anything away, but you'll know who I mean when you see him! We and the other couple made it through and enjoyed a few laughs while we listened to the teenagers in our group scream as they took another 5 minutes to escape.  I've never heard 18 year old guys scream and whine or seen people hide behind me like they did in this section. As I mentioned earlier, this is a guided walk through the woods, but don't let that fool you. It is better this way, as the trail isn't clearly marked at some points (such as the clown graveyard). Plus, the group we were with would have taken off running if they hadn't had to stay behind the guide. As this is a low budget haunt, the sets are not elaborate, they instead rely on their actors and the darkness only a woods can provide. The sets they do have are average in design, great in acting. My favorite by far is the scene where swine flu has obviously hit really hard, with symptoms we have not yet seen outside the woods. Also, the graveyard and the hunting camp are great. The actor's come at you from every angle, and I mean every angle. Also, they are allowed to touch you, so if you think something grabbed at your leg, it probably did. THe actor's did great, and the Jaycee's once again put on a great fundraiser. Props to them and their actor's, by far one of the best nonprofit haunts in the area.

Signage / Visibility / Location

This haunt, as a trail should be, is out in the middle of nowhere. It is easy to find, as it is one turn off of Hwy 41. There is a Sign where to turn, and flashing lights at the  haunt itself tell you you are getting closer.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

If you have to wait, they use a number system so you can walk around and not be tied to one spot. There is a bonfire with metal music and horror theme songs playing as well. Also, whatch for the snake handlers, somethingI have never seen before.

Actors' Performance

The actor's were great, they were dedicated and most didn't break character even if they knew people in our group. You never know who's going to come out from where.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

Again, the scenes and sets are not elaborate, but they do not have to be. This haunt relies on your basic fears, the things in the woods that are going to get you. THe limited scenes they do have add to the fears, but again, it's the actors that make the scenes what they are.

Length

It took us 37 minutes to get through, and there is not a minute of boredom in that time. It is guided, so the guide determines how long it's going to take.

Crowd Control

We did not see any other groups ahead or behind us, but there were people waiting before and after we went through. I would say they space the groups out real well.

Most Memorable Moment

Has to be the teenagers in the haybail maze.

Summary

For ten dollars this is a great value. On their profile they say their scare factor is medium. I would say as in the past they do no give themselves credit. While not superscared myself, I cannot deny the scares there were after watching how the rest of the group reacted.  I would say it is good for 12 and up, but a brave 10 year old should be fine if the parents want to deal with the nightmares. LAstly, remember it is an outdoor event, so if the weather looks questionable call them and makr sure they are open.

The Haunted Mansion

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at about 7:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: High

Review

My second haunt of the year was a trip to Brussels for The Haunted Mansion at Quietwoods South Camp Resort.  A short half hour drive into Door County from Green Bay, you know your going the right way soon as a bill board tells you that The Haunted Mansion is ahead. As you get closer to the haunt itself, signs off of Highway 57 point you the correct way, as  do signs at the rest of the turns you need to take. Be careful though, as the last sign, for Lover's Lane, is right where you need to turn, so there is no warning. The car ahead of us missed it, as did we and we had to turn around. The thing you notice most while driving towards the haunt is it's location. It is quite a ways from the higway, out in the middle of nowhere so it really sets the mood as your driving deeper and deeper into nothingness. We arrived about a half hour after opening, and parking was sketchy. We parked out on the road like a few others, but weren't certain if thats where we were supposed to be. They could use a few more signs or even a parking attendant to show the way to maximize the space.

If it's busy, you can tell from the road where you're supposed to go as the line starts stretching down the driveway. This line is for the first attraction, the haunted trail. You can either wait in line and by your tickets when you make it to the window, or you can grab a spot in line and send someone up to purchase your tickets so your ready to go when you get to the front. The line features a few ghouls walking around, one being one of the coolest costumes I have ever seen. There are also movie clips and things playing on a big screen for your entertainment. Lastly,  be sure to use the bathroom before you start, they have a nice facility at the start, and even if the waits are short  you'll spend a bit of time in the haunts.

The complex is set up in four parts, which have a certain order that needs to be followed. The first attraction, The haunted trail, is a short walk with a few surprises. My fiancee and I  had the displeasure of taking this walk with a group of obnoxious teenagers, which of course is no fault of the haunt staff., I think it would have been better with a different group. They walked fast so it only took about 5 minutes to get through the trail. Overall I would say the quality was about a 3 and the scare factor could have been a 3 if it weren't for the rest of the group.

The second attraction is the corn maze. This isn't your typical corn maze, which you'll know what I mean when you get there, but it is a neat effect. Here you will definitely catch up to other groups, but that's the point of their set up. Again, I would say this is about a 3.5 in quality and a 3 in scare. Definitely more confusion than surprise, but it's a really neat effect.

Thirdly, you reach the line for the Haunted Bus. I found this to be a very cool, original idea. The bus ride take approximately 10 minutes or so, which by the time you get to the end your happy to be getting off. The bus is decorated like a gruesome murder inside, and the music playing sets the mood right as well. I liked the ride for the fact that it's right in the middle, gives you a chance to sit down and warm up, and gives you a nice tour of the decorated campsites in the resort. One of the coolest effect I have seen happens on the busride, I don't want to spoil it, but I'll tell you it doesn't happen inside the bus. Inside the bus, in my opinion it gets old when the gouhls come out. In my opinion it was more annoying than scary. A person can only take so much random, unrelenting screaming before you've had enough. Ear plugs are definitely not a bad idea here.  Overall I would say 3.5 on quality and and 2.5 on scare. It's a nice way to break it up, but the gouhls are a bit obnoxious.

Lastly, we arrived at the feature event, The Haunted Manison. Wow, is the first thing that comes to mind. When you arrive here, you realize why the set up is as it is. As you progress through the attractions, they are steadily getting better, and they totally save the best for last. The line here features a screen with movie clips, as well as people walking around selling hot chocolate. The group spacing is great, so you do have to wait in line a little longer, but once you enter you don't see anybody else til the other side. The outside of the building looks cool too, like an old rundown mansion should. Before you even enter the haunt, you can tell how the acting is going to be. The person in charge of letting you into the haunted house really plays her part well, as she makes conversation with you. Then, when you enter, the butler plays an awesome role as well. After that you enter through the fireplace and the scares begin. The pathways are kind of tight, so a bigger person like myself had to do a little turning to get thorugh, but it made for more room to scare by having tight spaces. Overall the scenes were great, some of my favorites include the mechanic, the electric chair and the bedroom. All the actors stayed in character the whole time, and no one was scrambling to get back to their spots for the next scare. The only real problem I had in here was some rooms had multiple doorways, some of which led backstage (whoops!) Every room in this haunt led to a new surprise, most of which was original from any other haunt I've been too. I give the haunted mansion portion a 5 for quality and 4 for scare factor.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Signs at every turn you need to make when coming from Green Bay.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

THe only lin that didn't have a screen playing movie clips or ghouls walking around was the bus ride line.

Actors' Performance

Overall the actor's were great. They weren't really character driven with a script, but they did very well with their performances.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The sets were about average in the outside portion, but they were outstanding in the mansion itself.

Length

We spent about an hour and ten minutes there after we parked, and only about 20 minutes was spent waiting in line. The longest amount of time spent in an attraction was definitely the mansion, and it wax close to 20 minutes there.

Crowd Control

It lacked in the earlier trail, and the corn maze seemed intended to be jumbled up due to the misdirections. The MAnsion control was perfect, not another group in sight after you enter.

Most Memorable Moment

Most memorable moment came when I accidently went through one of those doors that went backstage and I ran into an actor set in his scene and made him jump.

Summary

You more than get your money's worth for the ten dollars you spend per ticket. Where else can you get this much halloween entertainment for that price. As stated in the earlier review, the early stages are just primer's for the main event. If you feel a little disapointed by the time you get to the Mansion, I guarantee your mind will be changed when you get out the other side. Considering all components of the attraction, I would put this at an even 4 for quality/fun and for fear

Neenah's Most Haunted

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Friday, October 23, 2009 at about 10 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

This was my first time at Neenah's Most Haunted, and it was well worth the drive.  It is put on by the Neenah Youth Go, which is a youth drop in center in Neenah. Don't let the above fool you, it's not your typical youth run non-profit haunt. They boast 24 years of experience and it really shows through. While it was not the scariest haunt I have ever been to, the actor's really got into their roles. As soon as you step into the first room, you know how the haunt is going to be. When the king gives you the background on the kingdom, you can see through the dedication he has that he has rehearsed the role to perfection. It sets the remainder of the haunt up very well, and you do not know what to expect around the next corner. The haunt uses their space effectively, with quite a few dark mazes and confusing passages. It took us 24 minutes to get through on an average pace, which was the right amount of scenes in the right amount of time. They also had nice use of common things such as strings, ribbons and mattress pads, all of which you need to see for yourself. Overall, I would say it would be good for anyone ages 10 and up. There are definitely enough scares for those who scare moderately easily, and even a few surprises for those who don't get scared. It is definitely worth your time and money as the quality of the acting and scenes are above average.

Signage / Visibility / Location

If you follow the directions from their profile on Haunted Wisconsin you'll get there no problem. They are easy to see from a distance as they have a lit up sign and some flashing lights that lead you right to them.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

We went about a half hour befor closing on a Friday night and there was absolutely no line. I beleieve the weather probably had something to do with that as it was not very nice. It is an outdoor waiting area, so if the weather is iffy dress appropriately.

Actors' Performance

As stated in the above review, the actor's were right on cue. They put a lot of time into their roles and should be very proud of what they have accomplished. They didn't break character, and when the leader of our group would get lost they would direct you the right way, but not by being obvious. This definitely was the strong point of the night. Keep your eyes open for the king and the baby.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The scenes were very well done. You could tell here that they have 24 years of experience. They know how to use what they have effectively.  The best example of this would be the ribbon room. They had a few of the standard rooms you have in every haunt but had a few of their own unique rooms as well.

Length

24 minutes, which was a good amount of time for what they have. Definitely enough surprises to keep you interested.

Crowd Control

I believe we were the last ones of the night as some of the actor's were standing outside after we got through, so it's hard to say how they do on the spacing of groups.

Most Memorable Moment

I would probably say the nursery rhyme was very memorable, as it was very creepy and haunting.

Summary

Overall these guys know what they are doing. As I stated before it's not the scariest haunt out there, but I believe for a beginner or even a family this is a great way to spend an evening. it is well worth the time and money. Also  they are wheel chair accessible, which opens more possibilities for people with disabilities as not a lot of haunts have the space to provide that feature. If you are looking for a place to take the kids and see them scared, or just looking for a scare yourself, Neenah's Most Haunted is the place to go in the Fox Cities.

Burial Chamber Haunted House Complex

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at about 11:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: Medium Fear Factor: Medium

Review

The Burial Chamber complex has been one of my favorite haunts over the last few years. Unfortunately this year they have slipped a little in my mind. In years past I have attended earlier in the season and earlier in the night, but on this occasion we were out late. Burial Chamber Consists of three sepaerate haunts in one location. Phobia haunted woods, Adrenaline, and Insanity, the last two house style haunts. The biggest problem I saw which could be because of the time of night was the group sizes/ my group consisted of just my Fiancee and I, but for Adrenaline we were put in a group with 10 other people. 12 people in one group! Thats way too many to go through a haunted trail, not to mention a haunted house. Our 5 minute walk through what they called a haunted woods also consisted of a large group that split itself up once past the ticket lady. Lastly, and worst of all we finished the night with 13 other people through Insanity. I understand the haunt is only open until 11:30, but if they want to be out by that time they need to stop selling tickets earlier. It really wrecked the night and they will end up losing credit if they keep that up. As a very satisfied past customer this was an extremely disapointing night for me.

Signage / Visibility / Location

The haunt is not hard to find at all, it's not too far off Hwy. 41 and it's only one turn from there. They have spot lights that shine up into the air that you can see from a pretty good distance. Once you turn off the highway and get to the road you turn on to you easily see the building right away. The big Burial Chamber painted on the side is a giveaway, if all the cars and people haven’t already made it obvious!

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

They have loud metal music playing and have music videos playing on the bigscreen. They have concessions and a tent to wait under. I’m not sure what the tent was for unless they call numbers at certain times. While we were there the only way to get in was to stand in line making the tent basically useless. I would suggest buying VIP if you can afford it or if you simply cannot stand the lines.

Actors' Performance

I would say they did good considering the circumstances. I can’t imagine what it’s like constantly staying in character while hundreds if not thousands of people come thorugh on a given night. On top of that with a larger group size they had to figure out when to jump out so everyone gets a chance to see the effect. They Didn’t break character and most of them seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Have to shout out to Stewart and the baby-both were pretty disturbing. Phobia was a little disapointing. The few actor’s out there didn’t seem to be completely in to it. I have to give them the benfit of a doubt though as our group split up and they probably did not know what was going on either because of it.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The set’s were good as always. Phobia doesn’t really have many sets or props, but they use the wooded scene as best as they can. Adrenaline was the same as years past. They always have great sets and some of the coolest props around but after a few years of the same it can get a little tiring. It wouldn’t hurt to spice it up a little bit. Insanity suffered this year from the opposite. Again they have great sets and a great theme as if a city has been taken over by freaks and wierdos, however they made changes to this one while I personally liked it the way it was. It had been repetitive but it was ok that way. Overall the sets and props were great, you can definitely tell they care how this place looks. The only other problem I saw was it appeared that it was a little understaffed and some rooms/scares went empty. Could be a product of group sizes again and that the scares were over by the time we got there but it was late too so who knows? Something just seemed to be missing.

Length

Phobia clocked in around 5 minutes while the other two took about 15. They were all shorter this year, but that can be attributed to many reasons. The time of night and trying to get so many people through. Also how fast your group walks through-if your scared or want to take your time to see everything.

Crowd Control

I honestly was not impressed with their crowd control. We never did run into another group, but being put into a group with 10-15 people is a bit ridiculous. I realize it was late and they were trying to get so many people through but I don’t know how that justifies the issue. It felt like they were taking advantage of the large crowd and then sacrificing the customer’s enjoyment. With people’s discretionary income spread thin, if they decide to spend it on a hauunt they should get their money’s worth. I would like to see it again earlier in the evening when the crowds aren’t so bad-I’m confident that it’s a totally different animal at that point.

Most Memorable Moment

While the large groups is the most memorable, I have to again comment on the big baby. Also, the one point I got to lead through Adrenaline I took a wrong tunr and opened a door to a storage area! It was nice and big, so it’s nice to know they still have room to expand if they would ever want to do so!

Summary

I know what this haunt can be like, and I'm really hoping my experiance is not what they are doing all year. I have always liked this haunt and expected much better from them. I know this can't be the way the haunt is really being run, it honestly kills me to say all this about it. I would really like to see how they run the haunt earlier in the evening. I would definitely recommend being out there early, it cannot be as bad as my experience. Pleas note, this is one person’s thoughts on his own experience. This by no means is a representation of every minute of the attractions operating hours. Everyone has different experiences and different thought on situations. This is my opinion, I hope everyone else has a better time in their situation than I did.

A Theater Of Lost Souls Presents: Nightmare Factory Haunt

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Saturday, October 18, 2008 at about 10 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

A Theater of Lost Souls, or ATOLS, boasts being one of the scariest haunted houses in the state. While I did not see the scariest haunt, I definitely saw the quality that is appreciated throughout the haunt world. Split into two seperate haunts, ATOLS starts off with a twisted walk through a sanitarium. Multiple patients warn you that you do not belong there, you'll catch what they have. Each room brings you to another crazy experiment taking place. While the overall scare factor wasn't the highest there was enough gore to make the faint of heart a little squeamish. Keep an eye out for the room with the strobe lights-you'll know it when you see it. In the second attraction, A theater of the Absurd, you meet some crazy clowns, all in a 3-d setting. You'll also meet some crazy aliens, who have a pretty cool effect in their hands that is definitely worth checking out. In my opinion this was the better of the two haunts. Unfortunately the only way to partake in this haunt is to go through both of them.

Signage / Visibility / Location

There is a little bit of signage off the main roads that direct you back to the fairgrounds that the haunt is located on. They do not have lights on them, so they are a little hard to see. The location is pretty good, it's out on the edge of town at the fairgrounds, so it's rather dark which adds to the feel.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

The wait is in a barn, which is nice in case of inclement weather. There was a screen playing some video clips.

Actors' Performance

The actors were good. They stayed in character and seemed to enjoy what they were doing. They did a good job of playing their scenes up. The actors in the strobe room were freaky, thats all I can say on that.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The sets were great, they definitely put time into it. THe props and scenes were all along the lines of a sanitarium, and I would not want to be a patient at it. While a hospital type feel is not out of the ordinary they did a good job of taking an often used theme and making it their own.

Length

The length of the main attraction was about 10 minutes, Theater of the Absurd about 5 minutes. It was a lot shorter than i would have expected, and there were some spots where they stopped us for a while

Crowd Control

We did not catch up to another group and nobody caught up to us. They did a real good job of keeping us seperated, and they let us go ourselves as a group of two. through the first part.

Most Memorable Moment

The most memorable part of the night was probably the clown who yelled at everyone in the Theater of the Absurd.

Summary

Overall I would have to say this was a good haunt. They really pride themselves on their experience and it show through in most spots. WHile not as scary as I expected, and a little shorter than I had hoped it was a well run haunt.

House of Bathory by Dead by Dawn Productions

by pud27 (Review Crew) after attending on Friday, October 17, 2008 at about 8:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: Very High Fear Factor: Very High

Review

Dead by Dawn is definitely no rookie to the haunted attraction industry. With haunts ranging from the Demon Sanitarium, to Windigo Manor at JFK Prep to this years haunt The House of Bathory she always seems to improve. This year is is no exception, they have put forth their best haunt ever. Dawn has a history of taking the fairy tales and stories we all loved as children and putting a dark twist on them, turning dreams to nightmares. Taking place in the store she runs and the apartment she lives in above she uses the space she has to the max. As you enter, be prepared to hear tales from the Mad Hatter as he prepares you for the journey through the House of Bathory. From there you encounter all the beloved stories, twisted beyond belief. This is not a new theme for her, but it is definitely the best one they have done.

Signage / Visibility / Location

There is no signage that I noticed, and very little on the building itself. I have been there before so I knew where I was going. It's located on the main road in downtown Manitowoc. As always, If you are unfamiliar be sure to get directions.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

This is an outside wait, but for part of it there are awnings over the business fronts. There was very little entertainment other than a stereo playing a mix of Halloween music.

Actors' Performance

The actor's were great. This was possibly the best acting I have seen in a haunted house ever. From the Ms. Bathory, to the Mad Hatter, to Charlie and beyond, you are led to believe these actor's are professionals. They never once broke character and they showed dedication beyond any I have ever scene.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The sets were great. They really took the time to design their rooms and make the most out of what they had. there is very little down time where you wonder whats going on. It's purely demented chaos through the entire thing, and it could not have worked any better.

Length

Again, I failed to get an accurate time on it, but I looked at my watch at some point in the house and it took 12 minutes from there. i would estimate around 20 minutes to get through.

Crowd Control

Crowd control was great. The put us We never once caught up to the group ahead of us and we did not see a group behind us. I estimate they wait 5- 7 minutes between sending the groups in. It makes for a little wait but it makes the haunt that much better. It gives the actors time to reset and get back into character for the next group.

Most Memorable Moment

The most memorable part of this haunt is definitely the beginning with the Mad Hatter. With all that this haunt does right you should have forgotten about him by the end. It really shows how good he is and his scene was that you remember him even after all the surprises and horror you witness after him Also have to shout out to the shocking portion of the night. I'm not sure if it was a static shock or if they have some sort of shocker in there that sent an actual jolt through me.

Summary

This haunt is great. I would not hesitate to go back tonight, and then get in line again after that. Dawn has done it again. It takes a lot to get me to jump at this point, but they managed completely. This review does not do it the justice it deserves. All the actors deserve credit-any one of them could be believable in whatever they do, they were that good. You really do need to check this one out. Don't just take my word for it, this one truly rocks. It is well worth the money!

Dominion of Terror

Review

The Sheboygan Jaycees boast over 30 years of experience in running haunted attractions and it shows. I attended this haunt last year and it sure felt like I had never been there before. I've been to many haunted attractions where things are only slightly different from the year before, but the Jaycees ensure that nothing is repeated. I don't think there was one scene or performance that occurred last year. On top of that, this haunt featured an eclectic mix of rooms with very little carryover in theme. It sounds like a mess but they pull it off with great transitions from room to room. The best part would have to have been the marketplace, which hosted the best actor; the butcher, and the best scenes, the movie theater.

Signage / Visibility / Location

The signage for this haunt is not the greatest, there are actually no signs at all until you get right down to it. I would strongly suggest getting directions if you are unfamiliar with Sheboygan. Once there it is pretty visible and the building is pretty cool. It's an old factory building in the middle of dowtown. The setting isn't the greatest, but the building is good.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

The building forms a sort of u shape in which the line wraps itself in. It's not covered so on a rainy eve like we had you will get wet. There is a concession stand and a few actors wandering around the wait area.

Actors' Performance

Most of the actor's performances were great. Even the ones who weren't as dedicated were good and remained in character. I have to give credit to the butcher, by far the best actor in the whole place.

Sets Scenes / Props / FX

The sets were all designed by different people, thus the lack of one standard theme. Once again, they did a great job in making the eclectic style work. They took a lot of time to make it look good, not skimping on areas to make others better.

Length

The length was great for any attraction. I didn't get a good look at my watch but I would guess it took probably took 20-25 minutes to get through. Well worth the cost of admission.

Crowd Control

We did run into a group in front of us, but when the actor's realized it happened they did a great job of splitting it back up. Overall crowd control was good. My fiancee and I were put in a group with three others who led the way. They went a little faster than I normally would have and i think that contributed to the issue.

Most Memorable Moment

The most memorable part was probably the butcher. I can't say too much but you'll know it when you see it.

Summary

Overall this was a great haunt. Picking out just little things to give examples is hard when everything is as good as it was. Everything about this haunt deserves recognition. As a charity event they do a haunt extremely well, even better than some for profit haunts. This one is well worth the time and money, you will not be disappointed.

House of Bathory by Dead by Dawn Productions

by pud27 after attending on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at about 8 p.m.

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

The haunt is located in downtown Manitowoc, so it is very easy to find. The location isn't the creepiest, but it is very unique. She has run haunts in old churches, sanitariums, and literal haunted paranormal sites, but this year she does it in her very own costume shop and house. Thats right, the House of Bathory is the very place she lives her semi-normal everyday life. There really isn't any signs pointing the way, but if you get directions it is easy to find.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

The wait is outside on the sidewalk, and it's a regular old line. Remember this when planning for your wait. We arrived around 8:00 and enter around 8:35. As for entertainment, there was music playing, and it was Razor 94.7 night, so there were live remotes going on. Other than that it's a typical wait.

Most Unique

The most unique thing about this haunt is what I mentioned before. The fact that she is doing this in the very space she lives each and every day. When your walking through checking out the amazing scenery, remember that most of this stuff belongs in her house as well as the haunt. The way they made it look like a real mansion as the name sounds made this really cool.

Actors' Performance

The actors were very good. There was a varied amount of ages of actors. They used a lot of kids, but appropriately so. There was a lot of clowns in one room, but I loved the use of the trippin' Alice in Wonderland scene. (wait, isn't Alice in Wonderland always trippin'?) The best character was by far the Mad Hatter, but they were all very good, and always in character. This has always been a good actor/quality haunt.

Summary

See above. It was great, from the unexpected (I'd like to say, but that'd ruin it) to the usual everything was very well done. She always puts a lot of effort in her haunts, and I would say this is the best one she has done in a while. There were a lot of new things I've never seen before, and it was well worth the time we waited. Overall we waited about a half hour for a 17 minute haunt. It was a lot of fun.

Signage / Visibility / Location

There really isn't any signage until you get to the haunt itself, then it is very obvious. It's location in town doesn't add much to the overall scare factor, but the abandoned, condemned look of the building adds to it. It's in a convenient location on one of Green Bay's main roads.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

We went on the second night, so there was no line. However, the wait is an outdoor one until you get on the front porch before you enter the house. There were a few actors outside on a slow night, so I'd imagine on a busy night they are going crazy out there. The wait area is set up pretty nice, it could handle a pretty good size crowd before spilling out of the area. There was the usual metal music playing throughout the area. All in all I'd imagine it wouldn't be too bad of a wait.

Most Unique

While they had the usual clowns and butcher scenes, biohazard and Christmas are definitely unique scenes.

Actors' Performance

The actor's did a very good job. From the kids to the adults to the people working the ticket booth, everyone knew there place and what was going on. They are always a dedicated group who enjoy what they do. I was most impressed with the fact they were so good for the second day of the year. By the time this year is over, this group will be really good.

Summary

I always look forward to what these guys can do. Where they have started to where they are now has been a lot of fun. They have improved every year and it's cool to see where they will go next.

Oconto Jaycees Trail Of Terror

by pud27 after attending on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at about 8:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: Very High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

The haunt is located just off of Highway 41, so it is easy to get close to. Unfortunately there is another haunted trail in the woods that is in the opposite direction on the same road, so the two haunt signs get confusing, especially since the other haunts sign was easier to read and see. The location of the haunt is great. You are out on a farm in the middle of nowhere, and the whole woods thing at night is always kind of creepy. It was a little hard to find, because it is deep in a gully and you don't see it until you are right on it. They could use a bigger sign in front telling you that you are there, especially pointing to parking. A lighted sign or even just a bigger sign would have been nice.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

The wait area was nice. It was in a stable so you could be out of the weather if you wanted to be. There was no entertainment that I saw, but we did not have much of a wait either. For being in a stable they did a nice job of setting it up to make you feel both welcome and slightly scared.

Most Unique

The most unique part of the trail was towards the middle of the haunt. You are told to sit down on a bench made of hay bales. The guide then knocks on a door to get the Old Hag who then proceeds to tell you a story. She was awesome! She knew her lines, was bale to improvise enough to get the right people into it. She really knew her part and did a great job in a truly unique performance. The whole trail offered various stops at scenes in which the actors interacted with the people going through the trail.

Actors' Performance

They were very good all throughout. The hag was great, as I mentioned, but everyone else did a very good job of interacting and staying in character as well. The use of non-seen actors was very good as well. There were numerous times that things came out of nowhere at you. Overall they seemed very experiences.

Appropriate For

I think anyone ten and up would enjoy this haunt

Summary

This was one of the most fun haunts we attended all year. While it was not the scariest of them all, it was a good way to spend 25 minutes of our night. They are only in their fourth year, but their quality says otherwise. I would have easily believed they were in business longer. Proceeds go to a great cause, and the price is definitely right. They could have charged more than seven dollars and I would have felt I got my moneys worth. I appreciate their modesty in their site listing, saying they are a medium scare. There were parts that made me jump, and anyone who scares slightly easily will be on edge throughout. Overall, it was a great haunt that I believe will only become greater over time. I would definitely consider making this a yearly haunt, even for the 45 minute drive.

Signage / Visibility / Location

The directions are very easy, as it is located on a major highway. I did not notice any signs until coming up on the place itself. A sign pointing the direction would have been nice. The place is very visible on highway 47, as it is all by itself with a big spotlight on it. The location was just outside of the city, but the building itself was kind of creepy. I think there was an open diner attached, but it all looked like it was rundown and unused for many years. The building works well into the believability of it being a haunted attraction.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

There was a small wait area inside, but if it were busy it would definitely wrap outside the building. We were there shortly after they opened and there was about a two-minute wait, so I don't know if there was entertainment. I do know they were playing Wishmaster on the TV.

Most Unique

There were a couple of unique features to this house. I really liked the indoor corn maze. It was well done and the use of hay bales to make the pathway was pretty cool. The clowns were pretty unique as well. I know clowns are pretty much a given at all haunts, I have never seen a haunt that has Clown Room written right on the door. It was kind of funny, and it did not take away from the room.

Actors' Performance

The actors performance varied throughout the haunt. Some of the actors were very good and stayed with you if they did not scare you. Unfortunately there were a few who gave up after one yell. One girl even laughed out loud after she attempted unsuccessfully to scare us. For the most part, they tried. You could tell they were having fun, and somewhat inexperienced.

Appropriate For

I think it could be a good haunt for kids 9 or 10 years old. It would probably be a good first haunt for someone looking to take his or her younger kids to.

Summary

I really want to like this haunt. It is obvious they put a lot of time and effort into it. While inexperienced, the actors could be great with just a little bit more confidence. While the event listing says they are not wheel chair accessible, it appeared to me that you could get one through. They have a lot of room and the walkways are very wide. I think they could expand and add a few more scenes by simply narrowing the walkways a little bit. The scenes were decent, but they rely more on actors to do the scares. Unfortunately on this night the actors were not on the top of their game. According to an archive review from last year, it took 20 minutes to walk through. It only took ten minutes for us to get through this year, and we walk slowly through houses because I like to be able to take in the scenes. This is a disappointing slide from last year. Overall, this haunt has a lot of potential. I do not know how long they have been in operation, but last year was the first time I saw them listed on Haunted Wisconsin. If they can expand a little and make use of all the room they have available, it could be a great haunt. For $10, it is a little overpriced, but the money does go to charity.

Signage / Visibility / Location

We were coming from Green Bay, and as soon as we pulled off of Highway 29 in Shawano there was a sign on the side of the road. There was signs all along the way, so it was not hard to find. It is very visible from the highway as well. The location isn't really in the creepiest of places, but the maze trail makes it a nice set up.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

The wait area was inside the building this time. On weekends they have it in a covered tent outside. There was pool and arcade games, but you would have to have someone stay in line in order to play while waiting. There was also a concession stand. There were not any actors wandering the building at this time.

Most Unique

The most unique thing about this haunt is the use of a wooden maze and their ability to set up rooms and scenes throughout it. The most unique scene was probably the choir room. It was the same as last year, but if you have not been here before it is different.

Actors' Performance

The actor's performance was great. They stayed in character very well, and they were quite convincing. Only one person strayed from character a little by laughing at something. Overall all, they did a wonderful job. I do not scare very easily, but this one had some moments that really freaked me out. One warning, they are allowed to touch at this haunt, which I personally feel adds to it a little. They did a nice job of keeping the spacing even as well.

Summary

Last year I attended Transymazeia after winning tickets on this website, and I knew after we got through it then that I would be back this year. The only problem I had with it was even though we were walking slow, we caught up to one group in the choir room and thus there were no scares in it. I don't know if the actors kept them there too long or if they were walking that much slower than us. But they did a good job of keeping us there to make the spacing even again. Because it was a rainy Wednesday there was only a five minute wait. It is a nice long haunt as well. It took our group of three 25 minutes to walk through it. If it wasn't a good haunt, we wouldn't drive 150 miles and 3 hours round trip to attend it.

Burial Chamber Haunted House Complex

by pud27 after attending on Sunday, October 15, 2006 at about 7:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: Very High Fear Factor: Very High

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

There were not any signs along the way, but the directions on their website bring you right to the complex. It is located about 2 ½ blocks off of Highway 41, so it is very easy to find. The complex itself is huge, and there is a big painting on the side that says Burial Chamber, so you cannot miss it. The location itself is great, as on the opposite side of the road behind the trees is Little Lake Butte Des Morts. The aura that the location amongst the rest of the buildings lends a little to the overall feeling of excitement as you come up to the place. There was plenty of parking space next to the building as well.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

The wait area is just a place to stand in line outside. There was a short wait for Burial Chamber, even though we arrived within a half hour of opening. We waited about twenty minutes, but it really did not feel that long. There were actors walking around scaring people and talking to them, scaring people with chain saws and just randomly walking up to people. There is also a concession stand as is a normalcy at haunted houses nowadays.

Most Unique

The most unique thing in this house was the use of shaking floors and walls. It really surprises you when your walking normal and the next thing you know you are almost falling over. It was something that I have never experienced in a haunted house.

Actors' Performance

While most houses group people up in six or so, we were allowed to go through just the three of us even though there was another group of three behind us. The acting inside the house was great. The costumes and makeup were incredible, as was the timing. The actors made sure that everyone got in on the scares. They improvised very well, and wouldn't give up if they couldn't scare you or if they kept scaring you. I can't think of any complaints about the acting in this house whatsoever.

Appropriate For

I personally would not bring anyone under 13 into this house. There is a sign out front that says PG-13, but there is a fair amount of gore as well as a lot of surprises.

Summary

This house is definitely worth the money. It is one of my two favorite haunted houses now; Blood City is the other one (this was my first time at both of these, but it won't be my last). If you have the time and desire for both, I definitely recommend it. As I mentioned, the wait was a little longer than I expected for being a Sunday night shortly after opening, but it is the longest house I have ever been through. It took us 21 minutes to get through the entire thing. The best part is there were very little dark mazes and hallways, and a lot more scenes, rooms and scares compared to most houses. There was a good use of air props as well, and the amount of actors was great. They did a very good job of using a few actors to cover a lot of spots and had the right spacing to accommodate that. Blood City scared me more, only because I lead through that one and was last in this one. In my opinion this is one of the best haunts in Northeast Wisconsin.

Burial Chamber Haunted House Complex

There was no line for this when we got there, and as soon as the front gate person finished giving us the rules, we were allowed to enter. Since we entered as quickly as we did we did not see any entertainment. While we were in line for Burial Chamber there were actors walking around scaring people and talking to them, so I can only guess that they would if there was a line for Blood City as well. There is also a concession stand as is a normalcy at haunted houses nowadays.

Most Unique

I think the most unique part of this house was the setup itself. A lot of houses follow a theme throughout the entire house, but I have never seen one like this before.. The theme that this house follows is one of a city taken over by oddballs and mentally insane people. It is awesome when you walk through doors labeled Post Office and see a post office completely torn apart. It was very cool throughout the whole house. Some parts were very scary while others were completely hilarious, especially Stuart the hairstylist.

Actors' Performance

The acting was incredible throughout the whole house. The makeup and costumes fit the characters the actors were playing, and they looked awesome as well. Everyone was cued perfectly and knew what they were supposed to do when. They didn't waste all of their scares on the first person, and they stayed in character regardless of what happened. The actors improvised very well with the interaction the wanted from us. For example, one character wanted us to have a drink at his bar, and I said we weren't old enough. He quickly responded, "It doesn't matter, we don't ID here". It was hilarious, slightly scary, and really impressive. There is no complaint I could make about the actors performance whatsoever. They played their parts very well.

Appropriate For

I would say that this house is appropriate for 13+. I think any younger than that might be too scared as some of the people and scenes are quite scary.

Summary

This house was one of the two best I have ever been to. The other is its companion, Burial Chamber. I inquired this morning (October 16th) as to which house has more people go through it, and I was told Burial Chamber sees about 20% more people each year because it is more established. It is too bad more people don't go through Blood City, as it the better of the two. We arrived and there was a wait for Burial Chamber but none for Blood City. If you are only going to attend only one of the two, make it Blood City. It is unlike any other haunted house I have ever been to, and it is well worth the money. It only took us about 13 minutes to go through the entire thing, but with no wait and the intensity of the actors inside it was well worth it. One suggestion, if you arrive and there is no one in line and it looks closed because of that, it's not. This house scared me more than Burial Chamber for the simple fact that I was first in line in this one. Overall this was a great house with a great theme and the perfect amount of scares.

Terror on the Fox

by pud27 after attending on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at about 11 p.m.

Fun Factor: Very High Fear Factor: High

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

Terror on the Fox is very easy to find. It is only a little ways off of the highway. Once you pull off and turn, there is a sign pointing the way. The house is located on the grounds of the National Railroad Museum, right on the shores of the Fox River. The overall atmosphere is pretty cool. The parking area and first waiting area is next to the road, but once you board the train, the atmosphere really kicks in.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

For entertainment while waiting for the train there was a sound system blaring music by Alice Cooper and others, and video of the house being projected on a boxcar. At the house there was a video screen playing clips from the house here as well, and people dancing in strobe lights in various second floor windows. There was covered waiting for the train, but uncovered for the house.

Most Unique

The coolest part of the house was by far the cave, and the animatronics in it. I don't want to give anything away, but it will definitely take you by surprise. The cave itself was very realistic, especially since it was made out of Styrofoam.

Actors' Performance

The actors were awesome. They stayed in character the whole time, and really knew what they were doing. They did a good job with picking out the people to scare, and picking the right way to scare them. We did not catch up to any other groups, nor did any catch up to us, and we were taking our time going through it, so they did well with group spacing too. The scenery was great; it looked very realistic. Their incorporation of animatronics and live actors was perfect, not too much or too little of either.

Appropriate For

13+

Summary

We waited for the train for about 20 minutes, and then waited another 17 minutes or so on the train before we moved. This was because they stopped selling tickets at 11:30, and this was the last train for the night. It could change later in the month if the crowds get bigger.

The train ride took about 8 minutes. This was our first time there, so the train ride was really new to me. I thought it was cool, although the train was slower than I had hoped it would be. They had a strobe light and a fog machine on the train, as well as a few actors walking around scaring people. The only problem I noticed was after a while the fog to get sickly because there was no ventilation.

We had combo tickets, so after the train ride we went through the 3D Carnage house. It was cool seeing how the paint and scary scenes came out at you, and the vertex was pretty cool in 3D as well. There were only a few actors inside this part and it only took three minutes to walk through. Overall, it's worth the $3.00 extra, but only once, and only if you want to walk through the vertex.

After the 3D house we walked a little ways through the woods to wait in line for the main attraction. We only had a short wait, about 8 minutes. The facade on the house was awesome. It looked like a real old mansion, but it was mostly made of semi trailers. It was by far the coolest looking house I have been at. It was smaller in person than what it looks like in advertisements and on the video screens, but it was cool nonetheless.

Overall it was very well done. The whole experience starting out with the train and ending up at the house is cool. Almost everything about this haunt is unique and different from any other house I have been to. The staff was great, actors and non-actors. Even the guy who answered my email earlier in the day was friendly and helpful. I would recommend this haunt to anyone 13 or older; however, if you have seen a 3D house and a vertex take the non-combo ticket and save your three bucks for another house.

Dewane Asylum

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

I am from the area, so I knew exactly where we were going. There might be a few problems for those that don't know where they're as there were not any signs. There were torches lit along the roadway and a sign on the building. When you get there, you can definately tell you are there.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

There weren't many people at the house, only one group in line ahead of us. So we talked to the ticket booth people for the three minutes we had to wait. There were people in the house that were yelling to us what the most scared peoples names were, and we obliged. It added to the whole experience.

Most Unique

Without giving too much away, the bridge. I could go into details, but that would ruin it, don't you think?

Actors' Performance

The actors were really good. They stayed in character well, regardless of what happened, and one room in particular creeped me out. (I don't want to give anything away, but kids in haunted thing scare me).

Appropriate For

11+, but they don't allow anyone under 13 in without an adult.

Summary

It was a very well done haunted house, while it did not scare me too much, it did have it's moments. I was with my girlfriend, my 17 year old sister and her 17 year old friend. It was her friends first haunted house, and they were both screaming the entire time. If you scare fairly easy, you'll be scared the whole time. If you enjoy haunted houses for their quality, whether it scares you or not, this house will work for you too. They did a very good job overall.

Signage / Visibility / Location

The signage was great. We were coming from Denmark (South of Green Bay) and shortly after we turned off of Highway 29, there was a beer sign with Transyl-maze-ia printed on it, so we knew we were headed the right way. From there there was signs all along the way.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Not much for entertainment. We arrived right before it opened, so possibly entertainment came later. As far as the wait area goes, there were other thingfs to do, just not while in line. the wait area was under a big tent, which really doesn't do you any good if it rains, because once you get to go through, your outside anyway.

Most Unique

The fact that it was a maze converted into a trail for the Halloween season.

Actors' Performance

The actors were awesome, all the way through. They are allowed to touch there, but it totally added to the experince. They stayed in Character the whole time, even when I made an idiot out of myself and couldn't find a door.

Appropriate For

12+

Summary

This place was great. I won the tickets off of this site and wouldn't have made the 1 1/2 drive there otherwise. They gained a couple of customers because we will go for sure next year, it was that good. Also, since it was just getting dark when we arrived, they asked if we in front minded if people with little kids cut since it was a little light yet. We didn't so we waited about an hour so it was funny to listen to the little kids. It really was a great haunt.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Real easy to get to if you get directions. There weren't too many signs telling you, but you knew you were coming up to it when you got there.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Loud metal music and a concession stand.

Most Unique

The fact that it was indoors and outdoors was cool. They did a lot of building work to make the old motel buildings and rooms all seem like one.

Actors' Performance

The acting was pretty good, good quality. They could have used a few more actors in the outside areas though.

Appropriate For

11+

Summary

Overall it was a good haunt. It seemed short but it was probably 15-20 minutes. the wait was only 30-45 minutes, which surprised me. it was rainy and cold, so that might have had something to do with it. As I have said in my other reviews, how scared i was is not an indicator as to how scared you may be. One girl in our group was freaking out over most of it, which makes it fun. There were a lot of nice references to different things, which i won't say so i don't ruin anything.

The Morgue Haunted House

by pud27 after attending on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at about 10:15 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

There aren't any signs pointing the way to get there, but once you get to the parking lot it's visible from at least 1/4 - 1/2 mile. There is a sign saying The Morgue pointing to the parking lot when you get there. There is quite a bit of parking. We went late and the lot was close to full, but their were always spots opening up and people directing where to park. As far as the overall location of the haunt,it is in a really good spot. It's out bsically in the middle of nowhere, but yet close to the city, that it really sets the freak factor mood in. The building that its in is creepy on it's own too.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

After buying a ticket you walk to the wait area through a haunted trail in the woods. Once you get to the wait area, there is a huge bonfire, a concession stand, and a video screen that played Dawn of the Dead, as well as others. There were occasionally some actors running around and stuff tryng to scare the people that were there waiting.

Most Unique

I would say the wooden Bridge, like they have on playgrounds that wobbkle and shake when you walk on them. It felt really wierd until you realize what it was.

Actors' Performance

The actor's that were there were pretty good. Most all of them managed to scare the girls that were with us. There weren't enough actors in the woods part though. There were a lot of people in the woods, but not acting at all, including one on his cell phone. Overall the acting was well done.

Appropriate For

10+

Summary

The house was a good time overall. It took about 20 minutes or so to walk through. The wait was long- 2 hours once we got out of the woods-but I'm used to going early when they open, so this was expected. We arrived at 10:15, and got in the house at 12:20, so go early if you don't want to wait as long. While I didn't find it too scary, there were a few things that surprised me. Most of the others that were with me were screaming alot, and i felt a few tugs on myuy sweat shirt wen something happened, so keep in mind how easily you get scared decides how scary The Morgue is.
