A Theater Of Lost Souls Presents: Nightmare Factory Haunt

by Nicole after attending on Saturday, October 22, 2005 at about 10:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: High

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

Mapquest got us there fine and the line outside made us figure out this was the place.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

We had VIP tickets (recommended because the wait a bit long. We didn't see creatures scaring folks in-line, but the place is allegedly really haunted and they had a video with actual paranormal voices that were recorded in the building.

Most Unique

The building itself. It's an authentic historical building - and you feel like you are in Disney's haunted mansion from the very moment you step foot in the lobby.

Actors' Performance

Very few we caught off-guard/not into it creatures-in-training, but the greater majority were intense, and a few even made my husband jump! We loved the clown, doll-room gal, and scary doc.

Appropriate For

10 and up.

Summary

Go with VIP tickets. They get you in fast, past the long lines!

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

If you mapquest it and not familiar where it is - it's NOT at the entrance of the train museum - look down the road for the flashing sign - and there it is.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

We had VIP tickets (recommended because the wait was 2 hours otherwise)... we did see creatures scaring folks in-line.

Most Unique

The way in which you GET to the haunt, and the extremely detailed sets which were amazing.

Actors' Performance

Very intense, a few picked up on our names and used them which was both funny and creepy.

Appropriate For

10 and up.

Summary

This is a TOP CLASS haunt. We've seen many haunts and we had to bow down to this one - this is worth a drive if you have to get to it from a-ways. As fellow haunters (with a haunt that isn't open this year), we have to concede - this is one of the best we've ever seen. The VIP tickets are worth the price - no waiting, free coffee/cocoa/bonfire VIP area w/goodie bags and a top-notch haunt experience.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Location is a well-known place for those from the region: Walworth Co. Fairgrounds. Signage was decent - directional signs off of I-43 weren't lit so keep an eye out.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

A entertaining light/sound show with some roving creatures.

Most Unique

Their actors. From makeup/costuming/acting - they look like they walked out of a horror movie.

Actors' Performance

EXCELLENT! Actors were VERY much into their roles and had tons of energy, great lines/interaction with us.

Appropriate For

10 and up.

Summary

Overall an awesome haunt, with energetic creatures coming at you from unexpected places. Wanted to see more of the actors costumes/makeup but it was a bit too dark and foggy at times - when they get close up (and they will) you can see that a bit better.

Bear Den Haunted Woods

by Nicole after attending on Saturday, October 1, 2005 at about 7:45 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

Hard to find unless you know where it is or look them up on here. Better lighting on signs would help.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None... but wait wasn't long so we didn't mind.

Most Unique

The method/mode of transport in which you get from the ticket booth/staging area to the actual haunt.

Actors' Performance

Very good. Only one we caught off guard... she actually apologized and said she was watching the fire!

Appropriate For

8 and up.

Summary

Overall, we have been fans of this haunt, because of some of it's home-grown unique touches. The length of the attraction seemed to be longer than we expected and were pleased with that! We missed the rope/plank bridge from the years before and wished for a finale'... actors for the most part were enthusiastic except for a couple... the haunt had somewhat of an anti-climactic ending.

Signage / Visibility / Location

We knew where it was (fairground) and interstate signs leading us there were sufficient.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Awesome light show - goes every 10/15 or so minutes.

Length

About 15 minutes.

Actors' Performance

Pretty good - the white vampire got us!

Appropriate For

All ages - careful with little ones though!

Summary

Pretty good - ask to go in small groups for a better scare(groups less than 5).

Signage / Visibility / Location

The biggest and most important thing this haunt needs is signage that is lit that can be seen from the road. We aren't from the area, used the direction/mapquest and past it several times because it was not lit up from the road. Even a simple strobe/balcklight seen from the road would have given us a clue it was a haunt.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

A cute animatronic skeleton - the skeleton sounded curiously young with a monotone voice?!

Length

Good for the price paid.

Actors' Performance

Very good effort. They were a little too physical - got hit in the face by a fake weapon, and one guy bumped into me as he was running into a room ... both of these were on accident. Even with the accidental incidents, they did a good job.

Appropriate For

13 and up.

Summary

For their first year, they did a good job. LOVED the music (I have many of the tracks at home!). Loved the tunnel w/the little surprises under the glass and the flying guy.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Good location - good signage.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Good - had a ghoul, and one tall-costumed character.

Length

Very good for the low price. Seemed much longer than last year!!!

Actors' Performance

Ok. Lots of little teenage gals just shrieking in your ears. The older actors did a great job. We heard the actors are all volunteers which is nice, but they aren't as interactive as other haunts.

Appropriate For

8 and up.

Summary

The haunt seemed longer than last year! The maze was a great addition. Good sets/scenes, actors just need to stop shrieking/screaming in people's ears and start growling or coming up with clever/scary lines to say to patrons.

Terror on the Fox

by Nicole after attending on Sunday, October 19, 2003 at about 10:30 p.m.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

A little hard to find w/construction, but once we went on the main road we found it... need more directional signage (that is lit) in front of the Train Museum (where the entrance is closed due to construction)... we missed the directional signs there because it was too dark.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Line ent. in the ticket line and wait for the train was VERY GOOD - the line actors really get in your face and know how to scare! Lots of different ghouls working the lines... it was fun to watch! There was NO line entainment in the line between the train and the house... and that was the longest line... could have done alot here since it's in the woods and dark... line entertainment here would rock.

Length

The wait between the train and the house was long... so we wished the house was a bit longer. If you count the house AND the train - it was worth it... the train makes it rock and makes it UNIQUE!

Actors' Performance

Good, but the strong blowing on the back of the head into my hair was weird... I don't care to get any cooties (germs) from the ghouls! Wished more were interactive... many just stood there. The ones who were interactive (did a strange purring/grownling thing) were EXCELLENT. Would have been more scary if more were interactive instead of just staring. The music/dancing schtick at the outside/front was cool (my favorite music) BUT having the guys in leather dancing is a bit unusual in a "Blue Oyster Club kinda way" (if you know what I mean.) People around us were joking about it.

Appropriate For

10+

Summary

Overall one of the best I've seen this year! Loved the train! Costumes rocked... sets were THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN!!!! The actors that were interactive were excellent.

Honest and constructive criticism: More actors need to be more interactive... several just stood there and we saw 2 talking to other actors as we walked by. The LINES: waiting in 3 lines was a bit much... 3 lines: one for tickets (which did move well), one for the train (moved ok) and one for the house (took forever). The waiting would not have been so bad if the line between the train and the house had line entertainment with live actors (maybe having ghouls abduct a 'planted guest' in the lines?)... and of course ghouls scaring line guests Lastly, the parking needed to be more organized - it was parking lot anarchy. The attendant basically told us that there was none, and that we shuold try another night?!?! (but we were from out of town, and that wasn't an option as we were anxious to see this house!). As the attendant told us this we saw an area about 100 feet behind him not being used that could easliy park 40 cars if it was organized better.

Signage / Visibility / Location

In a well-known mall... good location. Didn't see signage outside of mall.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None... but then again, there was no wait.

Length

Good for the price paid!

Actors' Performance

Pretty good - some interactive actors (the old/hobo guy was great!). Need more actors. Liked the misdirection schtick.

Appropriate For

6+

Summary

We found out the owner was age 19/20. Very impressive for someone that age to pull off a haunt like this! I've seen many by older and more experienced people that were disappointing and this was better than expected. Just need MORE crazy interactive actors... and it can really rock.

Fun Factor: High Fear Factor: Medium

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

Great signage... good location

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None... could have definitely used some - they have great actors at this haunt and a couple would be great in the lines.

Length

EXCELLENT! Seemed a little shorter than last year, but still a long haunt... about 20-30 minutes.

Actors' Performance

EXCELLENT! Actors get into their parts. However, this is the 2nd haunted outside/walking event we went to on this night and this place too had actors that just stood there as we walked by - most were good but about 1/2 dozen just stood there as we walked by - maybe that's what we get for being at the front of the line - we missed out on scares.

Appropriate For

8+

Summary

Actors need to work on timing... just don't scare the middle and end of the group. Makeup and costumes were great and some of the scenes/obstacles you must manuever through are very unique and cool. One thing we missed was the big finale from last year which ROCKED - this year's ending was very anti-climatic... the end was disappointing after the great finale that they had in 2002.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Limited signage (should be lighted)... good location (3 min. off of Hwy 83)

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None - as we left there was one ghoul circulating through the lines... could have been more... we waited for 1hour with no ent.

Length

Excellent - worth the $... about 20 min. to 1/2 hour.

Actors' Performance

Lots of short, little, young ghouls. Many didn't pop out at us, but popped out at the people behind us so we did get any scares... need better timing.

Appropriate For

8+

Summary

We were a group of 2 couples in our late 20's, they paired us up with a mom and 5 kids (ages 5-7) and a couple teenage girls - bad move. I became a "mom" to 2 of the poor little ones who latched onto my legs and now need therapy. We couldn't enjoy the haunt because I was to busy "protecting" these poor kids (who aren't even mine). The length of the event rocked - worth the money, good scenes. Actors just need to work on timing a little bit better... there were parts when we didn't have the kids with us and they still didn't scare us... they just stood there.

Signage / Visibility / Location

No signage from main roads (Sheridan)... difficult to find if you are not from Kenosha

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None.

Length

Could be longer... seemed that there were less rooms than last year (we missed the "cornstalk room" from last year).

Actors' Performance

Pretty good - mostly high school students.

Appropriate For

Ages 8 and up

Summary

Good acting, the building itself gives it a great atmosphere. Need to tell the monsters to not take their breaks in full view of the patrons... as we left there were about 6-10 actors outside right at the exit talking about what they were doing tonight after the haunt.

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

On a corner off Trolley Line - but could of had signs off main road.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None.

Length

20 minutes - perfect!

Actors' Performance

Very good - all done by high school actors and dancers! Some should have talked or "followed" us more though.

Appropriate For

10+

Summary

Very clever rooms that were scary, unique "Thriller" scene which I've never seen before and very cute. Be careful of some of the floors before the end - they are uneven (and not meant to be) and a few of us almost tripped before the "special exit." Well done for high schoolers - alot better than we expected - good job!

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Actors' Performance

High school aged actors do a really good job. One was being rude though and belching in peoples faces - not scary, just gross - P.U.!

Signage / Visibility / Location

Great signage, directions from website helped.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None - but nice waiting area!

Length

25 minutes - great.

Actors' Performance

AWESOME! I give props to your actors - having to work in the cold, damp forest each night for hours - we went at end of the night (that had bad weather) and actors gave it their all!

Appropriate For

10+

Summary

I GOT SCARED! Liked the ride out to woods.

We thought/heard it was going to be a ride deeper in the woods with people scaring you on the hayride, then you get dropped deeper in the woods and would have to find your way out and basically get "chased" out - which would have been cool...so we got something different than what we expected... would have been more fun if you had people running after you...but we liked this just the same - especially the finale - VERY COOL and UNIQUE! WAY TO GO! We want to come back again with friends!

Signage / Visibility / Location

A little hard to find - need better signage... had people from Waukesha from us and they even had a hard time finding it.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

None - waiting room was clever though - went with the Hospital theme very well. Would have been nice to have the "receptionist" in character.

Length

Short - we were in and out in 7 minutes.

Actors' Performance

ACTORS WERE TOP NOTCH! BEST I've seen so far!

Appropriate For

10+

Summary

ACTORS ROCKED - Best acting our group seen this season...BUT... would have been better with scarier surroundings - darker lighting, we were put in one room for a little while for no reason and just sat in there - lights on, not scary. Ambulance was funny - not scary. Would have been scary if lights came at you in dark. Overall lighting needs to be spookier.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Need better signage from main road - directions from hauntedwisconsin.com helped, but hard to see from road if you don't know the area or what you are looking for.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Great - a fun werewolf and glowing ghost were entertaining.

Length

15 minutes - could be a little longer.

Actors' Performance

Actors were good - some were late with their scares. Would have liked a finale.

Appropriate For

10+

Summary

One major problem: Groups were followed by employee/guides. MANY were directly behind us talking the whole time - which took ALOT away from the whole experience - and took away from the actors performaces which were great - non costumed guides/employees shouldn't follow so close, and should keep chatter down.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Entrance from last year closed due to construction - but had sign at alternate entrance and direction on their website and hauntedwisconsin.com got us there with no problems!

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Great - Ticket/Waiting area: Had creatures interacting with guests, concessions, all indoors! Final queues leading up in front of main entrance to house was themed great with detail and special effects.

Length

18 minutes - perfect.

Actors' Performance

Actors REALLY got into their parts! Costuming and makeup was EXCELLENT. In 2 spots timing of actors in their scares was off, but we it was because a group of knucklehead guys (who were patrons) infront of us kept going the wrong way to "be funny" and held our group up in those areas.

Appropriate For

Summary

Amazing attention to detail in scenes, GREAT SCARES, and ESPECIALLY LOVED THE ENDING which was interactive, funny and scary - which is an awesome combination! It was a TOTAL surprise! This was the last haunt we visited that night and it was a great Finale to our evening!

Review

Signage / Visibility / Location

Sign off main road helped - directions on hauntedwisconsin.com helped and mapquest took us right there from Hubertus.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Had a roaming ghoul - who was funny, witty, told jokes.

Length

10 minutes - could have been longer

Actors' Performance

Some were great some lacked. Witch over couldron and Nuclear waste guy were good. Some stared in your face and hung out behind you/followed you too long and became annoying - wasn't scary... felt like they were waiting for us to be scared?

Appropriate For

Summary

Great idea to have haunted woods before house but the Chainsaw guy couldn't get his chainsaw started. ALOT of actors timings were off and one room was broken - the crazy dentist was trying to scare us as a bunch of security guys were trying to fix something... maybe we hit it on a night when stuff was breaking down... ending was anticlimatic. Would have been better if things were working. They did do a great job of keeping groups seperate - felt like the show was just for our group - we felt alone in the house...kudos for that!

Signage / Visibility / Location

Not many signs off main roads - that would have helped, but we "mapqested" it and directions at hauntedwisconsin.com helped alot.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Great venue to wait in: Had video games, great selections of concessions. As for creature roamers...a couple of costumed ghouls - one of which was checking out the food and talking to workers at the concession stand more than the "victims" waiting in line.

Length

20 minutes - perfect!

Actors' Performance

GREAT acting. Actors really got into their parts! Especially your nun - being a Catholic I got a kick out of it - she rocked.

Appropriate For

13+

Summary

LOVED THE LAST ROOM - AWESOME! Funny, VERY interactive, and scary all at the same time - an EXCELLENT finale!

The unusual way you enter before you actually go through the house was unique, and unusual - but the windows overlooking it from the waiting area ruins the "surprise" so you know where you'll be headed first... should have blocked out windows in waiting area. be careful when you "Step down" from it - quite a large step - 2 of us almost fell.

Also, alot of actors where hanging out around and in the waiting area before the show began - took away from the affect - alot were peeking in at the waiting lines.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Great - easy to find and signs were helpful... very well known and accessible location.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Great - had a lot of "ghouls" and opportunites for pictures with "ghouls". One literally followed us as we walked to our car on the way out - just kept walking close behind us... unexpected, funny, and made up for the anticlimatic ending of the house.

Length

Too short. Got through both houses in under 10 minutes.

Actors' Performance

Not interactive enough... alot of teenagers screaching in our ears. One actor bumped me on accident - but I understand that happens.

Appropriate For

6yrs and up.

Summary

Would have liked more interactive acting and lengthen the attraction. The concessions, ticket sellers/takers, and survey ladies at the end were very sweet - very nice... glad to see they are asking the public what we think. Just needs to be longer, more interactive, and scarier actors. We're glad the proceeds go to charity...because most of our group thought it was too expensive for the total package.

Signage / Visibility / Location

Out of the way - did not see signs, but directions from website and hauntedwisconsin.com listing were helpful.

Wait Area / Line Entertainment

Excellent. There was slight wait - no roaming actors which would have helped, but after a 5 minute wait indoors next to concessions, there is a special light/stunt show included with the cost the ticket. Unique.

Length

Perfect - with the show, the "transport" and the house - it was just worth the price of admission.

Actors' Performance

Actors good - would have liked to seen more.

Appropriate For

Summary

Loved the "little monsters" - funny. Though the stunt show was great, we thought more of a halloween/horror theme would have helped... or to set up a theme/story of the haunted house. We had a great time!

PS: Do not turn right after the jail - we accidentally walked into the audio room - we told them they needed a door there... so be sure to hang a left instead!
