Easily the best haunt I've been to so far as of this date in SE Wisconsin.
The line wait was fairly quick, they sold munchies in the gymnasium where the line gets to wait, and they projected horror movie trailers on the wall to keep one occupied.
The gymnasium though could benefit from some extra simple Halloween decorations on the walls. There's so much wall space to play with here.
The actors for the most part gafve great performances, though one did come out of character to tell me that, "I might want to hold up a bit." Which was one minor problem they had. They seemed to have a problem with keeping groups separated in the haunt. I was walking fairly slow, yet kept bumping into the group in front of me which kept stalling and standing in place. Then at one point the group behind be caught up to me too. So that by the end of the haunt, I think there were roughly 5-6 groups of people all together at once. I think they could use a little help on when to let up on scaring a group of girls, and getting them through so that groups behind don't catch up to them. Also, there are ways to delay other groups without having to come out of character. Coming out of character should really be saved only for the most egregious infractions like violence or something.
The haunt really knew how to use chainsaws to a great effect. And being in a real high school helped the setting quite a bit.
The money for the entrance was well worth it. Many places will charge 13 bucks and last 5 minutes. This easily took us 30-45 minutes to get through. It's really big.
One of the best vortex rooms, and black light polka dot rooms out there. The mirror room was awesome, though It could have been better with black lights I think.
Something more could be done with the auditorium at the end, not sure what, maybe more zombie audience members and some show on stage relating to halloween rather than the Blues Brothers.
Also the security people, in vests and yellow shirts, could have had some simple face paint on at the very least. Same thing with the retired cop at the head of the line. Their presence breaks the illusion and lessens the scare factor at least in those areas.
The stairwells could have benefited from some more weird lighting. Maybe placing a bloody hand-print over one of the light globes so it casts a red shadow or something.
Anyway, totally fun stuff, really scary, this is a Halloween MUST SEE! Do NOT miss it!
Summary
Easily the best one I've been to this year so far!
MUST SEE!

Ghost Tours Of Kemper Center

This event was really enjoyable.
It may not be clear in the haunt's listing here, but there are actually two separate events at the same location.
One is the Ghost Tour. This was really fun, and it was great to go through a historical building that had a natural element of creepiness to it. The spiral staircase was incredible to look down, and one could definitely see a person jumping top their death from the top of it.
Constructive criticism, some of the security guards could have been spruced up with some simple face paint just to keep the haunted atmosphere going. It's hard to get scared when you see big security guards there ready to keep people safe. Some face painting could help counteract this.
Also, as with the 2nd event at this location, the acting could use a little work. Screaming "get out" is a bit cliche. Perhaps the bride would beg men passing by to marry her, and accuse women passing by of trying to steal her mate. Perhaps the Durkee Mansion woman could try to get passerbys to sit with her for some blood tea. Taking a little time to develop a character for each actor would help immensely. Anything other than "get out."
The 2nd event was the haunted house which was put on by some kind of teenager charity organization. There was some really great stuff going on here. It was really impressive, I only wish it had been longer.
The waiting area had some gravestones set up, but could probably use a bit more decoration to help get the mood going right away. Maybe some weird lighting or cobwebs or fog. Maybe some actors opening windows and yelling at the crowd. The tiki torches were a nice touch, did you know that they make tiki torches that have green and purple fire? Just a thought.
One of the best parts was the 4 trolls that wait by the gate under the building. These guys were really decked out. I had to get my picture taken with them they looked so great. Great acting from them too.
They have an area that sells hot drinks, sodas and popcorn and candy. That was good.
Not sure how this can be taken care of, but there was a problem with guests using their cell phones as flashlights through really dark areas in the haunted house, particularly the mazes. This always lessens the experience.
Also regarding the fear rating, I'm thinking the fear rating , it may be a bit more scary than the event has set their fear rating at. At least I thought so.
Really great stuff here though. Definitely check it out if you're in the area!
Summary
Mostly great stuff here, could use just a few tweaks.
MUST SEE!

The haunted forest was really a lot of fun. I was surprised at how big the haunt was, and the variety of "rooms." The price was reasonable, and the wait was fast. They sold some treats for those waiting as well. The hearse ride to the beginning of the haunt was a unique touch. The little bonfires here and there added a nice atmosphere.
Some constructive criticism:
The only real negative was that the hearse had the smell of gasoline inside. So much so that it began to make myself and others a bit nauseous. Immediately after getting off the hearse, you enter a room that they spin around several times. This added with the smell of gasoline doesn't make for a good combo.
Also, the chainsaws were a bit overplayed. The first one was a hit, but by the fourth, fifth and sixth chainsaw they start to become cliche and lose their effect. The chainsaws also reeked of gasoline.
The actors for the most part were great though they could use work on developing a character rather than the standard boo scare. And some of the actors could use some improvement on their costumes as a few wore little more than a rubber mask with a t-shirt and jeans.
Overall though, it was a lot of fun and worth the price.
Summary
Great fun, lots of fun, but room for improvement.

This haunt had a mix of really good points and really bad points. First the good.
The whole theme of a haunted circus is a great one, and one that isn't done too often. The actors gave a great performance and stayed in character. The initial boat ride in the fog was a great introduction to the haunt, and helped to set a mood. I really loved the black and white room with the harlequin camouflaged in it. Great effect. The vortex was awesome!
Now the bad, most of the haunt is too brightly lit for my tastes. There's nothing wrong with a haunt that is operated on a short budget, but darkness, shadows, and fog go a long way to hide a low budget. Many of the sets seemed plain and ordinary in regular lighting, not frighting at all, and a large room with only a few set pieces looks rather empty in bright light. Some of the "puzzle" rooms are clever but frankly after a while you want to get moving on, plus I see these as devices for holding up the line when it gets busier, not to mention separate groups bouncing into each other as one group gets stumped over a puzzle. A few more actors could be used in the transitions from room to room. Even something as simple as reaching out at the audience as they pass. The haunt could greatly benefit from the use of some sound effects as well.
Summary
While it definitely has its good points, it could use a bit of work.

The first thing you notice when you arrive at the place, is an immense crowd wating in line. We had to wait roughly 3 hours behind 300 people to get in. Luckily they sell hot dogs, and soda hot chocolate and a variety of other things, along with playing a move (ghostbusters this time) on the wall inside of a barn to help the wait move along. They state that they'll stay open until the last person comes in, so I wish I had waitied until 11 to go in, since by that time the crowd had severly diminished.
The house itself once you get in is okay. First you go though a backyard trail, where there is an assortment of ghoulsih figures dressed in cotume. but all they really do is growl at you as you walk by, and aren't used to their full effect.
Once you enter the house you are greeted by a variety of actors much better than those on the outside trail. However, the bulk of the interior of the haunted house is filled with animatronics, which aren't as scary as a good actor.
There's lots of getting on your knees and crawling through small spaces, so some aspects of it are more like a labrynthine fun house.
Alot of the scenery was really good though, and alot of great props.
While it's alot of fun to go through, the wait may not have been worth it, and it could use more actors and less animatronics.
Summary
Long wait, okay rewards.

This was the best one I've been to this year. I have to say, that they got me more than a few times in this one. Great transitions from one scene to the next, and the cues as to when to move to the next scene were clear. Great use of actors and props. Little in the way of animatronics, which aren't as scary as good actors anyway.
Summary
Scariest of the season so far!

This is a good effort for a first year. I was impressed by the sets and the good usage of actors to progress a coherent storyline throughout the performance.
However, it could use some improvement. Firstly, much of the house which is in the basement of Paulo's Pizza on 51st & Howard, is too brightly lit. Particularly in the halls between sets. I would recommend at least replaceing standard lighting with colored lights or black lights, and leaving it pitch black in some areas.
Paticularly at the end with the big alien, complete blackness with a strobe light would be alot more effective IMO.
Also, I wasn't quite sure when to leave one scene and move onto the next, it could use some better cues as to when to move on.
Also, there could be some minor things of interest between scenes. Somthing as simple as hanging fabric that has to be pushed through to make the transition from one scene to another more interesting.
They do however give you a coupon for a free drink at their bar at the end.
Summary
Great first effort, but could use some improvement.
